FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) is a series of U.S. government standard that is applied to ensure computer products meet high security requirements, particularly in data protection. This standard used government agencies, industry and organizations in the U.S. that store and transmit data with sensitive information.

"FIPS certification will help expand the reach of BlackBerry users in the 6 on government agencies and other organizations that are security conscious," claims Scott Totzke, Vice President Security Group at RIM's BlackBerry.
